So 98 xj blower used to work on 1,2 &4. Recently only 4. Tested resistor and has pretty high readings and was pretty dirty around the resistor coils. Also noticed the connector was quite melted. I have a totaled 98 I've been pulling parts from as needed. It has a good resistor and the connector has no melting.
Now I could just pop in the other resistor and it would probably be fine. Concerns I have is the melted connector. The blades on the resistor I pulled were all rusty and crap. So I'm not sure if it was the blower or water or something that messed up the connector. The Jeep was covered with mud in the interior when I got it so I'm pretty sure it had gotten wet before. I'm worried if I put the good resistor in it'll either go bad also or the connector may fry.
Contemplating wether or not to change the blower. Also I wanted to replace the whole blower harness with the good one from the parts xj. Not sure wether I'll be able to remove the section that goes from the resistor to the BM without significant removal of dash parts. Anyone ever done so?
Of coarse I'm aware that I can cut and splice the connector but I'd rather not. I might just put the bad resistor back and wait til I pull my dash to fix my blend door to replace everything and hope like heck it doesn't catch fire. At the same time it's been working like this for at least the nearly 3 years I've had it.

So I cleaned up the resistor I thought was bad. Readings were improved. I reinstalled it and I still only had high speed. I'll have to check the connector on the back of the speed selector to see if it's also melted.
Had to split wood yesterday and today I'm doing a brake job on my van and tomorrow swapping a water pump in my other 98. That's why I just put the old resistor back in. If I get time I'll pull the blower from the parts Jeep and see if I can't get the wire harness out easily. Should also flush my heater core if I can. And this damn polar vortex sucks.

I should add that once I do the brake job on my van I'll be driving that instead. And once I get the water pump in my other 98 and button up a few more things I'll put that on the road so I can fix everything properly on the one I'm driving.

Splice in a new connector and go get a new resistor. They are not that much money. Not worth putting too much time into this. If you solder the new connector wires it will be good as new. I would also check the ground wire for your blower motor and make sure the connection is good and clean. I dont know about the newer jeeps but the older ones this is a known issue.

Just follow the wires off of the blower motor. It should ground to the fender or the firewall. I dont remember mine being shared with anything, but they didnt even remove the paint under the wire when put together new.
