I've got a stock '96 XJ and my blinkers and 4-ways do not work. I did a lot of searching and was unable to find an issue like this.

The problem started when I was following my buddy's 4-runner with the 4-ways on because it was being towed. The dash indicators kept getting dimmer and dimmer until they faded completely. At that point my left blinker worked fine, however when I used the right blinker, the indicator light was dim. When we stopped, I got out and walked around the rig when the right blinker was on. The two lights on the front were fine, however the rear one was flashing so dim that I could hardly see it. Then they all of the sudden stopped working.

I've done a few different things to try and fix it. I first replaced the turn signal flasher, with no luck. I also replaced the multifunction switch, that did not solve the problem either. I used a multimeter and tested the relay to make sure it gets power, and I tested the port where the multifunction switch plugs in and that gets power as well. I at one point I was able to use a paper clip to jumper between two a few different ports on that connector and was able to hear the relay ticking on and off and even got the dash indicators to come on. I tested it again and was unable to get the indicators to come on, and could get the relay to tick once when I jumpered two ports. I plugged the multifunction switch back in and when I press the button for the 4-ways or turn the blinker switch on (with the key in the ignition of course) I can get the relay to tick once.

I tried to attach the wiring diagrams that I've used but the .pdf exceeds the file size limit. I have factory service manuals for a 95 and 97 XJ but not for the 96. The first diagram is from the 97, the second one (for the multifunction switch) is from the 95 because the 97 has a different switch. I'll figure out a way to upload them if it would help. Any help is appreciated, I'm not very good with electrical.

Edit: I also have an aftermarket hitch and wiring connector. I've heard that shorts can often occur as a result of these but have no idea how to check for that.
