Best XJ Repair Manual
I just bought a 1998 XJ. I was wondering what the best repair manual (Hayne's Chilton, etc.) is for that year. I've heard bad things about the Chilton's manual, but have had good luck with them in the past for other vehicles. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I bought both, and there was some detail in both that made em worthwhile... not the answer you want
I'm sure it was worth it in the long run to have both available though...

Neither Haynes nor Chilton can compete with the Chrysler Factory Service Manuals which can be had on eBay for as little as $10. Buy the FSM.

FSM
Search online for a FSM, I found one on another Jeep forum and down loaded it for my 99. However I lost the link to a crashed hardrive. It was Great Lakes or something like that. Good Luck.
My FSM has been invaluable, if you need to know its there.

the alldata program is the fsm, you just subscribe to it online. It is actually better than the hard copy because of how it is organized by system and searchable. It also includes all of the factory tsb's and recalls for your year specific vehicle. It also has all of the factory service manual illustrations, and it is all in a printable format. I subscribe to it on all of my vehicles in addition to buying the haynes manual. additional vehicle subscriptions are half price. check it out at www.alldatadiy.com or you can go into any autozone to buy the subscription package.

I've got both the Haynes and today I just received the FSM I bought on Ebay.
I like them both. I've got the alldata subscription for one of my other cars. Hadn't even thought about the alldata for the Jeep.
My experience is that for some items, for instance the electrical schematics, the FSM on CD tends to be more practical as you can print it more easily. At the end it's probably just personal preference.

Thanks, guys. The FSM seems to be exactly what I need. I may supplement with a Hayne's if I find the need to.

-I have the FSM and its good until it tells you to use "special tool #XXXXXX" the only way to get those tools is from dealerships and they don't give you any other options. I end up spending the most time trying to find some other tool to make it work.
