Default Best option to add temperature gauge?

My '99 only has an idiot light for engine temperature in the dash, which I don't much care for - once that light comes on it is already too late! On old-school non-computer vehicles adding an accessory gauge was easy. On more modern vehicles I take it you have to use a little care so as not to disrupt things. Is something like the following the best option?

http://www.trailtech.net/digital-gau...or-hose-sensor

These gauges are available with different sized radiator sensors or coolant hose sensors, not sure which would be best in this application, but installation in a heater hose would probably make sense. Since existing sensors are not touched, installation should at least in theory not affect engine operation. (I actually would prefer an analog gauge but have not seen anything suitable.)

Go to your favorite JY and grab a cluster and sensors.

Problem solved.

On your 99 the gauge readings come from the ECM. Should be able to swap the gauge cluster and be on your way.

That's the best option

If it's a straight plug-and-play swap I'll keep an eye out for a suitable cluster in the boneyards. Any idea what years are compatible? (I assume at least 1999-2001?)

I'm not sure. I would think 97-99 but they added CAN bus in there sometime. Could check the parts catalog(s)

I just found the exact procedure on youtube:

Looks pretty easy, and would be great to have full factory gauges. He's claiming 1997-2001 is compatible, but I should probably double-check compatibility on anything other than a 1999 cluster.

If you can find one for a 99 and the ECU's for the 00/01's had a different setup for the coil packs plus the 99 had a some things not available one earlier models but I'm not sure on the gauge clusters.

If you can't find on local try eBay for one or craigslist for a part out 99.
