i do look in there, about every 1000 miles on my bike, and then i clean it. it filters the air good, i never see even any dust on the other side of the filter or in the intake area before the carbs, and tons of dirt and pebbles, and oil from the factory emissions system on the other side, never had a problem, and had a great improvement of fuel mileage, 48 mpg to 53, and seat of the pants acceleration. but i guess to each his own......i personally like k&n, but im just trying to find a cheaper equivalent, and i think the afe will do it for me. thanks for all your input everyone

Just get one of those spectra $25 cone filters from auto zone and some pvc pipe or exhaust tubing :P $30 works just as good as a $200 big brand. And thats exactly what your paying for, the brand. Spend the money elsewhere.

X2. Build your own. Save alot of money. Use it to buy some fuel injectors or something that will actually give you a fuel mileage increase or some other part to improve your XJ. Spend $30-$50 on your intake, enjoy the noise and slightly improved throttle response (the only benefits anyone seems to notice) and don't forget to sulk over the fact that your homebrew intake kit didn't come with a pretty sticker (not worth the additional $100 in my opinion) to stick on your XJ. Buy for function, not for the brand.

Haha, very true. Or hit up your local sign shop and have them make you up your own custom sticker for your own custom homebrew parts!

AFE stage 2 all the way for the Jeep 4.0 I was the first review for this in 2010. Running this for 2 years no complaints except that you have to clean it but that's with any filter. This will not fit if you have DANA 35/ABS setup. The biggest boost I got with the Intake was http://strokedjeep.com/index.html 63mm Throttle Body + Ford/Bosch 849 4 Hole 24lb injectors. The Jeep has a little bit more pep.

heres mine, cost me the price of the filter and a foot of pvc along with the price for the vaccum connect kit at oreillys. All in all like $40 and 25 of that was just for the filter. Made the Heat shield from a road sign we "found" and the rubber is a piece of the trunk seal from a early 90's model Grand Marquis that was sitting in the yard. Could have looked alot better if i would have put more time into it, but just wasnt willing to.

If you plan on doing this, make sure you get the thin walled 3" pvc or else you'll never get the filter on. It'll be a tight fit as it is, was very difficult to get mine on the first time. But after a few weeks it stretches where you can take it off and on normally without hassle. My jeep is a 4 banger so I had a little bit different space to work with, but I made one for a 00' w/ 4.0 right after and it actually was a little easier. Only tools used: Grinder with grinding wheel (to cut the aluminum of course, we couldnt find the saw), drill, 3" hole saw.

I bought a Spectra intake from rockauto.com. It relocated the intake to just under the driver windshield. You have to drill out a 3" hole in the fire wall. It draws cold air in that location and you can go in high water. Also the system has an in-line filter so it is not exposed. I bought it becasue I magazine recommended it. I like it and it is very diffent than all the other intake systems. Plus! You can ditch the old air box and add a battery if you want for more toys.
