I'm sourcing motors for my '01 XJ and so far am partial to Powertrain Products for about $2200 otd with
a 5 year unlimited warranty. Would love any input at all...

I've heard that the Jasper motors are to be avoided since they basically rebuild with the absolute minimal corrections (meaning ignoring typical "best practices") though some have reported success. Beyond that, I have heard nothing good nor bad about any other option.

It doesn't answer your question, but I have always wondered when buying a new engine for the 2000-01 XJs, do they supply it with a stock 0331 head? Or a TUPY head?

What exactly is a "Jasper" engine? Powertrain Products and Jasper are one in the same?

That's a hard question to have answered, but I feel like they would not put a time bomb head on a 5 year warranty engine.

They are two different companies. Call and ask about the head issue.

I have a Jasper engine in my '96 Blazer that has 40K trouble free miles on it. It was installed by a friend whose shop is certified by Jasper. The first Jasper engine he installed had a slight knock in it at it's first start up. He called Jasper. They had him run a few tests whereupon they sent out the motor that's in it now that same day. Needless to say no matter what engine company you go with make sure you do your homework when it comes to selecting a shop to do the work. I know at least with Jasper the installer has to be one of their choosing in order for the warranty to be valid (3yrs/100K miles on the engine I purchased).

What is the warranty on a JASPER remanufactured engine?

Most applications for JASPER® Remanufactured Engines are covered by a 3 Year/100,000 mile (whichever occurs first) nationwide warranty that – parts and labor.

My friend was fully compensated for the work he did.

All I can say is my friend told me as long as he changes the oil and filter and records it every 3K miles if the motor fails within 3yrs/100k miles I get one at no cost to me. It's out of warranty now as it's been over 3yrs as of the December past.

I'm not even saying Jasper's are the "best". I'm just relaying my own and my friend's experience. He stays busy enough that he wouldn't need to be a Jasper dealer. Again I'll stress the importance of finding a shop you can trust no matter which company you go with.

Any idea if they use foreign parts or not? I'd love to have parts made in N. America...

Good question but I can't answer it. I do know that as with almost any type of product now a days many brands of vehicle parts that were "Made in America" for years past no longer are.
