"... Beijing-Benz Daimler Chrysler Automotive Co Ltd (BBDC) is a 30-year joint venture between Daimler Chrysler and Beijing Automotive Industry Holding Corp. Daimler Chrysler holds a 50 percent stake in the venture. The venture constructed a factory in Beijing in 2005 to assemble up to 25,000 Mercedes-Benz E- and C- Class sedans per year. The factory commenced operations in the beginning of 2006. A second new factory adjacent to it produces vehicles that were previously assembled by Beijing Jeep Company, the predecessor to the new joint venture. Yeah, it is the jeep 2500. You can get all of the parts to do the front end conversion. It is about $1000 to get everything-fenders, lights, bumper, brackets. ect. ect.

The way I heard it is that Chrysler sold all the tooling for the XJ to the Chinese lock, stock & barrel, including the assembly line (conveyors, robots, and all) and paint shop. Basically, they up and moved the entire assembly plant plus all of the tools that were located at Tier 1, 2, and 3 suppliers for producing various parts and shipped ALL of it. Amazing, really.
