Default Battery Size

89 Cherokee Ltd, 4.0 is 100 miles away with a dead, seven year old battery. Takes a Group 58, which Costco doesn’t carry but has a Group 34 which is 3/4” longer, 3/8” narrower and 7/8” taller; more CA and CCA.
My concern is the height, as the Jeep isn’t near me. Don’t want to have it arcing on inside of the hood
The Costco Interstate batteries have been good to me and at $83 it’s almost $50 less than a Group 58 at NAPA or other stores.
If anyone can confirm the 34 will work it’ll save me 200 miles of driving; the 34 is spec for a 2000 Cherokee so I believe it should work.
Thanks in advance.

the 58 I have now in a 91 and 96:

7 1/4 wide with no space in the tray
9 1/2 long with about 1 1/4 extra space
7 high to top of the terminals
the bolts from the battery hold-down are 1 1/4 higher than the terminals but the battery itself is already pushing on the upper radiator hose

Google search says a 34 will fit. I'm pretty sure that's the size I have in my '89 XJ.

Excellent; that should work. I’m pretty sure my upper hose is to the side of my battery.
Thank you very much, you just saved me a 200 mile drive. This forum is great!

Thanks, I have Interstate in all my vehicles including 6-volt deep cycle in the travel trailer. They all have lasted more than 5 years in extreme heat four months a year. Costco price of $83 can’t be beat.

Installed the MTP-34, fits perfectly. The old battery was probably the same group, identification was worn off but was same size as new replacement. The 34 has a reserve capacity of 120 vs. 80 and CCA of 700 vs. 540 compared to the 58, same price.
