battery hold down?

battery hold down?
ok. so i just got a newbattery because my old was poop. but the hold down wasnt fitting right. so i just didnt screw both in. then at friends it would start. so i tilted battery backwards and the lights lit right up? could it be the hold down? or maybe alternator.
