I had a yellow top installed in my 1990 XJ that was group 34/78 and it worked/fit.

Blue, check out some threads on naxja before buying optima. Optima WAS good about 4-5 years ago. They have since gotten very cheap and poor on quality. Dad has a yellow and red top from two years ago. Tried to use the winch last week and it was dead. Wont take a charge either.

And wouldn't ya just know for that $180 bucks he got himself a stinkin 1 YEAR warranty instead of a nice 7-8 year prorated one from anyone else.

Do some research...bet you can save $75 or more on a battery like exide orbital and have a better warranty to boot.

If optima wants to be the best then quality needs to be better and they should stand behind their products with a good warranty.

Sorry was thinking of Yellow Top.

OPTIMA YELLOWTOP WARRANTY INFORMATION
D34/78, D75/25, D34, D35, D51, D51R Automotive, LTV, Commercial, Car Audio 12 Months Free Replacement, Remaining 12 Months Prorated
Series String Applications With Battery Management System or CV/CC Charge Method 12 Months
Series String Applications Without Battery Management System 1 Month

A thread from Naxja. Everyone has opinions. I read this thread and noted that for the cost...It was not the best idea to buy optima.

Given I have two yellow tops DEAD and a read top reading 11.5V and will not charge past that...I'm going with something different next time.

Hey blue, i was at sears a couple years ago to buy a battery and was stuck between optima or one of their die hards with better specs. I was running a milemarker winch that was used every weekend and sometimes for long pulls so this was taken into consideration. Due to the price of the optima and the better warranty on the die hard, i went with DH. I used it for two years of winching and it held up. During long pulls, the battery gauge would start to go down slowly but after wards it would shoot back up and be fine. I never had a problem with it. I'm sure the AZ battery will be fine for you since you don't winch as often plus that's one sick warranty.

Another option is to find a battery wholesaler and get a nice big deep cycle marine battery....That's seems to be the standard down here for folks who run winches or dual battery setups..

I'm on my second red top in my 90 now, don't recall any fitment problems (34/78). This excludes using the pastic cover though.

To fix the plastic cover on my 94 (running Red/Yellow combo), I did have to trim the plastic cover to clear the passenger side hood mount.

You want a red top for a starter battery. Yellow's are not ideal as primaries and has already been noted, have a better warrentee.

Please start a new thread about your dual battery setup with pictures.

I am going the dual route and have a bunch of questions about how others have set it up in a XJ.

I take it that you are running dual batteries. Can you post a picture of the drivers sided battery and tell us/me a little about how you mounted it? That is my plan I already have the cables and an Isolater. Just wasn't quite sure how to mount it and where to route my breather. I have eliminated the airbox but have not figured where else to route the breather and have room for a second battery too.

I use the 34/78 Sears Platinum which specs the same as the Odyssey . I hear a lot of people rating the Odyssey as better than the Optima and the Die hard Platinum is made by the same company that makes the Odyssey from what I have read when I was looking for a battery . I like it and its not a deep cycle which I understand needs to be cycled to last . If that is true or not I don't know and don't matter now . Looks just like the Odyssey except platinum color instead of Orange . I also installed a new not remanufactured starter and this thing sounds like an electric drill when ya hit the key compared to the previous set up

Are these Duralast Golds regular lead acid batteries or are they a gel cell?

If they are, they can't even be used in any set-up where the battery isn't mounted verticle. And its also a good reason why they are so much cheaper. You would be comparing apples to oranges..
