Drive it in 4th. 5th is overdrive
:-( higher octane gas (premium) just burns slower. The only thing it is used for is combating detonation in higher compression motors. Using it on an engine that doesn't need it or isn't designed for it can increase deposits and emissions because it won't burn as completely. It takes more squeeze to fully ignite a higher octane fuel. Diesel would have an octane rating off the charts. Older gas contained lead to drive the octane up and lubricate components. That is why in the 60s they could run 12 or 13 to 1 compression with a low tech carbed engine. Sadly octane, like oil viscosity, is widely misunderstood.

Emissions are like the Final Exam the XJ didn't study well for the night prior because it was out wheeling.

I am so glad we don't have them here in ShenCo. There was a rumor they would come here, and I think a bunch of the guys with older trucks and farmers really gave the town office an ear full. So far, so good. I think emissions are a joke personally. Another way to try and get an older vehicle off the road.

... if you keep up on maintenance emissions shouldn't be a prob. My 90 passes no problem. In states like ca we have learned to live comfortably with them and make our engines run better as a result. I have no problem with emissions... in densely populated areas it is absolutely necessary.

Alright, so I don't know who to blame // thank // whatever, but I passed today! It's MAGIC, I tell you!

Thing is, My numbers are INSANELY lower this time around ( they failed it for back brakes not working twice today... I told them I wanted a new lane and a new driver ) New tester was smart, and down geared to use engine braking ( I owe him a beer too, now ) and it passed first time he tried it, no 2nd chance run, nothing)

So my next question - can improper driving of the vehicle cause it to fail // run high? I asked someone can drive a stick and was told yes... I suppose I should have asked if someone knows how to drive it right.

My nox was slightly higher today, but the Jeep was also running warmer, so I expected them to be.

sorry.. this is all over the place. Regardless, thank you all for your input.

I totally learned something new today! Advice well heeded from someone who has to deal with California emissions ( which from what I understand.. are a HUGE PITA. )
