Ball joints or struts?

Have a knock in the front passenger wheel when going over bumps. Is that the struts or ball joints? I would apreciate some help

ultimate-xj Nov 14, 2011 09:27 PM

Well I don't think it's struts cuz you don't have struts

You have shocks at all 4 corners. There isn't really one thing that makes noise in a suspension so guessing with no recording is almost impossible. but if its over bumps I would check

the shocks/bushings
Sway bar links
coil insulators
control arm bushings
ball joints
track bar bushing/joint

If its making noise it should be loose or showing signs of rubbing/impact.

Yeah... You do have shocks though. But I wouldn't think they would have a knocking noise, unless they were realllyyyy old. Can you give us a little more detail on this noise? Or can you do a little more investigation? It's just a single knock? Look around for shiny metal which will be an indication of play in the components

I get a similar knocking im pretty sure its my ball joints and likely your issue too unless your shocks are toast. Easiest way is to jack the front up and check for play in the wheel moving it up and down. If it doesnt move then its likely shocks or bushings. Good luck!

Shocks are pretty old. I'm ordering a rc 3 inch add a leaf lift kit soon so the shocks will get done. But it sounds bad off road and over speed bumps. I'll jack it up and check for play.

just a side note.... get full packs if there is any way you can swing it :)

Nasher89XJ Nov 14, 2011 10:23 PM

And I meant shocks not struts. Whatever haha

Nasher89XJ Nov 14, 2011 10:27 PM

Full packs?

Gorillaxj Nov 14, 2011 10:27 PM

yeah, full leaf packs. new leaf springs rather then an AAL.

I did, I love my RC kit, can't beat it for the price !

The new springs make that much of a difference?
