Hey guys I have a real bad smell of gas in the cab of my truck. Was wondering if anyone might know where to start on trying to find the leak or if there might be a common thing that goes wrong on these things. If anyone could point me in the right direction it would be a big help.

With the way the odor of gas travels.. it's hard to exactly pinpoint, and since it doesn't stay on the driveway long enough to see where it's coming from, you kind of have to hunt for it. I had a pinhole on the top of my gas tank, and you could smell it from across the parking lot. Could be fuel filter, a fuel line, a bunch of stuff. Take your hand and run it along all your fuel-related parts and see if your hand gets wet from the gas.

Does it only smell when the tanks over 3/4? 1/2?

 

thank's man i'll try that. It seams to smell anytime. Right now there's a 1/4 tank and the smell is bad

 

During sunny and hot days I got a smell too. I suspect it comes from tank hose, or rather losen evaporating (?) hose. I mean the one that air gets out of tank - not the one you pour gas there.

 

yeah but this smell is really bad!! I'm afraid to smoke in the damn thing

 

I have a bad gas smell in my XJ too, but I think its due to my diet.

 

My gas smell went away when I fixed all of the exhaust leaks. I had a crack in the exhaust manifold, and holes everywhere in the exhaust. I fixed the cracked manifold with Muffler Weld from Auto Zone. It comes in a shoe polish like can and actually worked, to my amazement. I also replaced the cat and muffler with some inexpensive ones. Worked great! Nothing makes you hate driving your jeep more than the gas smell. Not healthy at all, either.

I first knew I had some issues when I did a Seafoam treatment and white smoke was coming out everywhere, not just the tail pipe!
