Default Bad alternator or bad earth ?

Hi guys,

It seems the Jeep is determined to **** me off !

Driving home from work today all was well then sudden the check gauges light came on, so I checked them and watched as my Voltage meter sank back to nothing as my engine was running I just kept on home when I got back I turned off the engine and tried to re start it, dash lights came on nice and bright went through the start up procedure lock unlock depress clutch and turn her over just a click and no voltage on the meter

Anyone any ideas ? Just when it seems I've ironed out the kinks she plays up again

check your connections at the battery first then check the wires to your starter...

Seems strange that she'd just lose voltage like that though I can hear the starter try " clicking" but there isn't enough to turn her over suggesting to me the alternator isn't charging the battery and now the battery isn't pokey enough to start her up, given she's diesel there's quite a drain with heater plugs on start up.

I've got a booster pack so I'm going to fire her up with that drive a few miles from home and call out the AA recovery roadside assistance, I took out a policy with them if they recover me more than 2 miles from home they take me to the garage of my choice and pay up to £500 worth of repairs !

The booster pack won't fire her up either all I'm getting is clicks, so I'm guessing the solenoid is working but not enough to crank her over any ideas guy as I need her to get me to work on Monday !

But would a battery problem react like that on the gauge when I turn the key the gauge drops right down below the line from 12v ?

This a a classic alternator symptom. However, do the following:

Check the battery voltage prior to starting the car. Then, start the car and see what the voltage is. If it's higher (hope it's ~14 volts), the alternator is charging. If not, the alternator is not charging your battery while you drive.

Don't forget, you could have a bad alternator AND a bad battery (i.e. The battery may not have been getting its daily charge if your alternator was/is bad).

The local chain auto store will test your battery and alternator for free. They want you to buy the parts then and there.

Knackered alternator good news is it's covered on my parts insurance with the AA which means I pay £25 for a brand new genuine Jeep alternator

Thanks for the help guys !
