I purchased my 1988 4 door Limited 4x4 XJ 2 years ago and am just now starting to rebuild it (due to lack of funds before) and ever since I bought it my gas gauge has been backwards and my gas light comes on whenever I fill up, how would I fix this so it reads the correct way instead of backwards?

 

Check the wires to the back of the gauge. try reversing them.

 

Guessing I'd have to pull out the dash? Or can I get to it from the engine bay?

 

Your guess is correct. although you could try climbing underneath and switching the sending unit wires at the fuel pump. Either way its a pain in the nuts.

 

LOL! My first cherokee (87) had an optomistic gas gauge, the farther I drove the more gas I got, haha. Reason for mine being like that, the prior owner installed a newer tank, and sending unit assembly (from an HO 4.0). When he plugged it in, it ran backwards......I left it like that, I found amusement from it.

 

Thats the way my current (88 limited) was when I bought it. I was like the more I drive the more gas I get lol.

 

Haha yeah the previous owner put in a new tank so I guess that might be my problem, I think it's funny to be driving in the middle of no where and scare someone who's in the car that I'm out of gas when the tank is actually full hahaha! I might end up just leaving it for fun but thanks for the quick answers!
