axle problems

My axle in my 98xj is just not working for me, when I turn the wheel to the right the tie rod rubs the steering shock, I just put a 4.5 RC kit on it and everything in the front is new what can I do to fix this.:help:

I'm sitting at 6.5 of lift and my tie rod hits the sway bar link mount. To resolve this issue I will be installing extended link mounts when I transplant the jy D30 I just picked up.

Did you listen to what the people said on the other forum that you posted this problem on? What were the results?

BuckB91XJ 04-29-2009 09:04 AM

I can't really see from that picture you posted but, I'm betting that your drag link or tierod is bent. I started my lift with a Rusty's 4.5 inch kit and never had your rubbing problem. Give the draglink and tierod a good close inspection.

i just up all that on everything in the front is new

did you install a dropped pitman arm

jd4x426 04-29-2009 03:18 PM

make sure nothing is bent and if nothing is bent you probably didnt put on a dropped pitman arm that would be your problem

mike37 04-29-2009 03:31 PM

and did you re aligned the front end with a lift you will get toe in and that will make the tie rods to close and bad tire wear

littleleonard0909 04-30-2009 03:42 PM

no i just eye balled it b/c its off road only

littleleonard0909 04-30-2009 03:55 PM

post up some of ya's front end pic maybe I can go by that

I am sitting at the same height and had the same problem. I lowered the mount and extended the sway bar link.

Adjust that bolt on the steering knuckel. :pwned:

BuckB91XJ 04-30-2009 08:59 PM

OK, guys what we have here is two different guys with two different lift heights that have two different rubbing problems. You guys really need to be more careful about hijacking another guys' question thread!!!!!!

1.) littleleonard0909 - you'll be first since this was your thread. What I see in your pictures is that you have an after market REALLY beefey tierod with tierods that are much thinker than the OEM tierods that come on an XJ front D30. So, what is happening is taht your much thicker tierod end is hitting the bolt that holds your steering stabilizer in the mount. Not really sure what to do about it. Maybe grind a little on the bolt and the tierod end to make them clear each other. Maybe put some kind of longer steering arms on your knuckles to help your bigger tierod clear everything.

2.) Winston427 - Now, what I see from your pictures is that you are lifted 6.5 inches without a dropped pitman arm on your steering. I know a 6.5 inch lift requires a dropped pitman because one came with the 6.5 inch RC lift we put on my son's XJ. This has caused a more extrme angle on your draglink. which has the tierod end that hooks to your draglink sitting higher and hitting on your sway bar link mount. You need to get a dropped pitman arm for your steering and you'll be good to go.

94xjstud 05-01-2009 12:34 AM

but with that pitman arm, he will also need to change his track bar to keep the angles parallel

littleleonard0909 05-01-2009 04:14 AM

Im thinking it is where my upper control arm are not adjusted right or would that make a different

BuckB91XJ 05-01-2009 10:53 AM

littleleonard, go with the following adjustments on you control arms for your lift and the caster angle should be perfect for the given amount of lift:

4 inch lift LCA - 16 3/8" UCA - 15"
4.5 inch lift LCA - 16 1/2" UCA - 15"
5 inch lift LCA - 16 5/8" UCA - 15 1/4"

I hope this adjunstment can fix this issue for you.
