Axle info help, I'm finding conflicting information
Okay guys, from the axle info sticky and other sources it appears to me that my 2001 Cherokee Sport 4WD with no ABS (vin check shows it does but no ABS modulator next to the master cylinder) but it appears to have the Chrysler 8.25. But I have read some threads where people state that if it is not ABS equipped, that it should have a Dana 35.
Hmmm, thanks guys. I know my fathers 2000 XJ has ABS so I will have to check his and see. I guess I will have to learn who to trust on these different forums It's different being a noob to a new platform when you have over 15 years on other forums,
That's definitely is an 8.25. Ignore the covers, because they're not as easy to differentiate when they're under the truck as all these pictures make them seem. The telltale sign to identify the 8.25 is the flat part on the bottom of the pumpkin. The D35 has a round bottom that looks like it would roll on its side if you cut off the axle tubes and put just the pumpkin on the floor. The 8.25 looks like it would stay put and not roll over.
Also, SeriousOffroad's correction above is important.
If it came from the factory with an 8.25, it didn't have ABS because the 8.25 that came in the XJ wasn't equipped for it.
If it came from the factory with a D35, it may or may not have ABS. The D35 was compatible with ABS, but it could also be installed without ABS.
Therefore:
If you look under the hood and see ABS, you know it came with a D35.
If you look under the hood and see no ABS, you don't know what axle it has, because it could have either one. Then you have to look at it.
Of course, since it's a fairly popular mod to swap axles, and people sometimes swap in a different axle if the original axle is damaged, the only reliable way to tell is to look at them.
