Axle covers/fill plugs for '99
Hi all,
am putting together a big list of stuff that I will need to order/buy for my "new to me" '99 that I'll be picking up on Friday. One thing that I'm wondering about is the fill plug for the rear axle (D35) I've seen mention of a press in rubber plug, is it likely that that's what I have? So for initial maintenance I should probably plan on buying a new plug?
I was thinking I would get a pair of the "lube locker" type gaskets and actually remove the axle covers to drain and clean (too bad they don't make them for an AW4 pan as well) while I'm at it are there any inexpensive OEM type covers available for the D35 that use a regular pipe thread fill plug rather than the rubber thing? That makes me a little nervous... or is it really not that big a deal?
Does the D30 front axle use this same setup or does it use a regular threaded plug?
thanks!

D35 does use a rubber press in plug. As long as it is still pliable, it should work just fine. The D30 uses a conventional pipe plug for filling the diff. While the lube locker gaskets are great, all I ever use is black RTV silicone. Its cheap, easy and does not leak.
BTW, congrats on getting your jeep. I also have a 99, my second so far. I have owned a YJ for years and enjoy every minute of work on them.

As said above, rtv. If you're looking to save money, lube locker is not the way to go. I just put lube locker gaskets on my rig about a week ago and am very happy with them but I'm wishing I just used a $5 tube of rtv instead of the 50 total for front and back
