Default ax-15 transmission problems

Hello Fellow Fools,

I bought a 1999 XJ last summer with 199,000 on it. Now it has 225, 000 and runs well (I know its alot of miles for less than a year of driving but I live in the rocky mountains, give me a break). This winter I did normal tune up, replaced all the fluids and put in a new clutch with full kit. I also replaced driver's side motor mount that was bad.

While driving home from a trip last week the transmission started grinding as i shifted fifth gear. Then while in fifth gear during deceleration a loud whirring comes from the center console area. Now other gears have started to get hard to shift into. It all has happen in two days of driving, as I haven't driven it since then. The jeep is stock but I do alot of long distance driving pulling a small trailer. My guess is my transmission is going out. I am hoping some of you more experienced fellows can affirm this or give me another route to check. As for transmissions, my local rebuild shop said it starts at 2000 with my core. Any help on getting a rebuilt or good used ax-15 reasonably and in a jiffy? This is my dd and I am hurting without it! Thanks

Did you resolve what was wrong with your jeep? I have a 91 that is doing exactly the same thing, except it does it when decelerating in third, rather than in 5th (5th has had a little noise for at least a few years now, but it was a little different noise, and shifting was OK before).

I got my rebuild parts (bearings, sincros, and seals) for about $175.

Check to see if the fluid is filled all the way?
