AW4 Trans Question
I've been workin on figuring this out for some time now. I have a 94 xj with a aw4 tans in it. A buddy of mine just got a 98 xj with a bad trans. Same 4.0l engines etc... everywhere i look i get the same information as basic as it comes that this trans was used in all xj's 87-2001. I understand this. My dilemma is did they ever change the plig in adapters for the chassis harness to plug the transmission in? So basically can my 94 parts transmission fit in his 98 as is?

IIRC, there's a plug change at '97, so there's some change needed. Someone has posted a list of what needs to be done to swap the different years, but I don't remember where to find it.
It might have been tjwalker or cruiser54 who posted it.

I'm in the dark here but have ideas...the 94 may well work fine in the 98 if you can change the NSS and maybe a speed sensor? In engine swaps that is what's often done. Swap the metal, but use the sensors and wires that match your year/Puter. Others likely will be more help.....somewhere there was a change in the spline count also. (27 and 29) The trans output shaft to the TC can be changed. Like Mark mentions plenty changed by 97...Besides those guys don't forget Freedgr!

1998 a transmission input speed sensor (ISS) was introduced. The '94 transmission did not have the boss to mount the ISS so it won't be there. The TCM will be looking for the ISS input signals (none) so it will create a constant DTC/CEL.
The transmission range switch/sensor (aka NSS) changed in '97. A '94 NSS won't work in a '98 XJ.
98-01 AW4:

.
New style transmission speed sensor (ISS and OSS). The '98 will have one mounted on the transmission transfer case adaptor (OSS). One is need for the transmission (ISS).
