AW4 Install, new lines necessary?
Afternoon all,
AW4 went out on my 91 2 door XJ in March, 284,000 miles, all good things must come to an end I guess. Picked up a 95 4 door in April.
That said, I'm picking up another AW4 from a 94 tonight after work, and doing the job this weekend. Question, is it necessary to replace the transmission cooling lines when swapping in the new trans?
I'm picking up new quick disconnects, and don't have the extra cash to throw around for new lines if it isn't necessary. Any experience here?
Thanks as always everyone

Well, one of my transmission cooler lines went pop and it didn't take long before I was on the side of the road. About 200 yards. I didn't have any spare ATF or tools to fix the line so it was a tow job but at least I saved the trans!
I'd say do it while you're there.

I agree with Morat. I understand not having money, but some things just need to be done.
At the VERY LEAST, get some . You probably won't find it at AutoZone and the like. NAPA carries it. It's an aerosol can that you attach to your trans cooler lines for flushing out the lines and the cooler prior to installing a transmission. The idea is to get out any particles that were spread through the system by a trans falling apart. Think about it - if you had a transmission failure, that just about guarantees that you had somethign come apart. If that junk got sent thought the lines to the cooler, and you leave it there, those particles will promptly trash your new transmission.
