I have been searching for over a day.
Don't need advice on pulling transmission, done that many times on Cherokees, but on the Front Pump Assembly
Do you need a slide hammer to remove the AW4 front pump assembly? or does it just unbolt and pull out?
I read this at another forum, but was slightly confused
"A cheap way to remove the oil pump without a puller. Under two bolts that hold the pump on you will find threads for a puller. After removing all bolts replace the two bolts with studs then find some larger bolts for the puller holes and slowly work it out."
My plan is to take a front pump assembly out of a 98 Cherokee 2wd AW4 that I am converting, and put it in the 2000 Cherokee 4wd AW4 because I believe the Seal and Bushing is bad in the 2000. I read the bushing needs to be machined out and pressed in at a machine shop (I have a press) - so I thought take the 2wd pump, put a seal and rubber O'ring in it and install it on the 4wd.
Background, I used my daughter's 2000 Cherokee to tow another Cherokee on a tow dolly (dumb move too much weight), First time from Alabama to Florida with no problems with trans (but it was white knuckle down hills squirrelly), next time was same setup in stop and go traffic going across town and it started smoking bad - Trans got hot and pissed trans fluid out of the front pump seal, once it cooled down it was fine and drove it that way for months - this last time I went to pickup a 16' utility trailer, it was raining but I think even before getting the trailer I believe it was smoking slightly from 2 hours at 70mph, after getting the trailer it started smoking real bad we got about 40 minutes into our drive home and it started slipping - low on trans fluid - I put more trans fluid in drove fine but with-in 6 miles I pissed out 4 quarts of trans fluid, I then had it towed home by a buddy. Time to fix it.
Thanks,
Bryan
