AW4 Erratic Shifts
I’m in need of some help.
My 96 with 108k randomly started having transmission issues. It’ll drive okay for about 30 mins or so (although it still feels off), then it’ll start searching for gears randomly. The transmission also will go in and out of overdrive occasionally. There’s no pattern or consistency, it’s like it completely forgot how to shift. I’ve had zero prior issues and my symptoms occurred the same day I replaced the entire distributor. The fluid looks and smells perfect, it is also full if not slightly overfilled. I was originally thinking it was the tps, so I replaced it and probed the back of it with a multimeter. I’m getting 0.8v at idle position and 3.9v at WOT. I don’t think the issue lies there or in the kickdown/TV cable, as I checked that too. I took a peek at the tcu, but all appears fine without testing. Im not sure where else to check, I was thinking of trying a different TCU before I tear into the transmission. I do have an idle sound that could possibly be flex plate bolts, but it sounds like it’s coming from the bottom end. It has the AW4 and the 4.0.
Any help is greatly appreciated!

Don't assume the new parts are good. Since you were working in that area, I would clean and inspect grounds that connect to the block by the oil dipstick bracket. One of those is from the TPS.
