Well I did the tranny fluid cause it looked all burnt up and smelly, then I thought hell just to show it here for science, Ill take out the filter and cut it open to show what its looking like, stuff Duma likes to do.
This filter has been in the jeep for almost all its life, well it is really the only filter the jeep has had till today. The 95 has had its fluid changed once and awhile I promise (if at all really most of my time is on the 2000
)well here is the filter sorry its all f'ed up, I just cut and ripped it out.
You can see how brown it is, but I don't see anything really stuck in it.
In the light for better looking.
You can even read through it.
So this filter didn't even need to be replaced, even though the fluid looked so bad. I could of just did a few drain and refills, which I'm doing right now (sure
More pics of the AW4 screen.
Ps I'm the original owner for 95 and 2000, so I know whats been done to both jeeps
and the 95 had its original filter cause I never changed it until today.

Thanks for the pix. As everyone can see, the trans filter does not have the same job to do as do an oil or air filter.
All it does is keep metal particles down in the pan and not circulating with the fluid.

Assumption is the mother of all f#ck ups.
The OP should check his level first at operating temp before doing any draining.
My (ex) shop overfilled my trans by about two pints (1 ltr). I didn't know because I didn't work on my Jeep back then, and ASSUMED they probably knew what they were doing.
Of note when looking at the dipstick level: keep in mind it only takes 500 ml (1 pint or....well, whatever parts of quarts you measure in) to go from " add to full" (although that wont be stated on your transdipstick, that only has two holes).
Since the threads around my drain plug were starting to wear down and I didn't trust it to last several more drains and refills, I looked into and then did the forward flush of the AW4. Can be done by just yourself (but help is handy) and done in a few minutes. Changed out virtually ALL ATF and am now done for the next 50K.

Did you know that by design the plug is soft and the pan is tough?
New plug instead of new pan....
Pretty clever, eh what?

You need to go through all the gears a few times before you check the levels of the fluid. My transmission shop guy showed me this a long time ago.

I love how everyone over complicates a simple drain and fill. I just did my first one and thought the worst and it took 15 mins to do.
Drain
pour 3 qts of DEX III/MERC in,
start,
shift through gears a few times (drive forward and backwards if preferred)
Put in neutral and check level, if too low then add
If too much, drain some out. It isn't rocket science. You'll be amazed at how easy it'll be
PS- and to add something else too this, do yourself a favor, and if you haven't done so yet, adjust you "TV" cable (kickdown as many people wrongly call it) by following these easy steps
Turn jeep off
Open hood
Location throttle body and 2/3 cables that are connected to it. The cable closest to the front has a setup with a plunger on it.
Depress the grey button and whilst holding it down, push the plunger all the way in
Release button
Go inside jeep and press the accelerator peddle all the way to the floorboards
You should hear the plunger clicking as it automatically adjusts.
