Unknown, I just got done with my swap last week and I got lucky that the engine was rebuilt and in doing so, the torx bolts were swapped for regular hexes so I was able to get them from the engine bay (took me a little while) with a regular 6 point. I wouldn't try that on your unless you get some wrenches that are the external torx instead of the sockets. If you end up using sockets, it's really not very hard at all if you have two people. It's manageable with one, but you will get a little bit frustrated. When I did my transmission swap, I actually kept the transfer case on the back of the transmission because it gave me something to pull on and get the angles from bellhousing to engine right before re-installing.

If you are going to be doing this, please don't hurt yourself with a floor jack. Go to harbor freight's web site and order a transmission jack for $80. In the grand scheme of things, your crushed ribs and your future trip to the ER using the floor jack just aren't worth it for $80.

Also, remember to properly seat your torque converter! I seated it off of the vehicle before reinstallation, strapped an empty water bottle across the front of the torque converter to hold it seated and then just cut the straps and deflated the bottle when I got it lined up.

The product I used to clean the tranny cooler was called Kooler Kleen: http://www.oreillyauto.com/site/c/de...0444&ppt=C0207

Sucks that I can't use my floor jack. But I'm going to listen don't worry about that. But I'm having a hard time justifying the $80 for a one time use though. I'm strapped for cash as it is now. Between my wife, kids, house payment and all the overhead associated with running a household..... Any other methods you folks are aware of? I must be honest I'm a little intimidated by the job but I CAN turn a wrench and with all the brains here I should be adle to do it.

Bench press method? Climb under, set the trans on your chest...and a one...and a two....heave-ho...
You'll need a spotter to put the bolts in.
(j/k... please don't do that)

Or you could try this for $38:
Amazon.com: Transmission Adapter Jack: Home Improvement Amazon.com: Transmission Adapter Jack: Home Improvement

Then toss it up on Craigslist when you are done and get some of the $38 back.

FWIW expect about 150# for the trans, bellhousing and converter and 75# for the transfer case. Just so you know what sort of weight to expect.

That price doesn't sting as bad. Bench press method? Classic lol. You guys rock lol. Love the little quips on this site lol.
After I take my son to the dentist I'm going to look around on my XJ just to see what's what...... Thanks please keep them coming. It's probably going to be a few weeks before I can get my tranny though. But You guys have been a real help.
I was wondering how much an AW4 weighted btw.
On a side note when all this happened my kids cried..... and I felt like I did when I lost my dog. My XJ IS part of our family. But that's a whole other thread there. I'm going to keep you guys posted. Thanks again.

When I took mine out, it seemed like the transmission weighed about 100-150 and the transfer case weighed from 50-75. I've seen them change a transmission in nicaragua without any jack and they just used two by fours and slowly stepped it up to where it needed to be by adding two by fours and removing them. I personally wouldn't do this by myself, but if you have a second hand, you may be able to use that method

I had to take those two bolts out to do my engine swap. I kept the original trans (195K so far) after doing the fluid change as described in my previous post. I don't seem to have any issues with it now. There are times when I wish it would downshift a little more readily when going up hills or getting in the passing lane, but from what I've read this is a common issue withe the AW4.

No sir I haven't seen that link. It has been bookmarked lol. Seems pretty straight forward though. I wonder if that adapter piece that Radi provided the link for would allow me to tilt the tranny too.
Anybody use it before?

The saddle does tilt forward/back but not side to side.

I pulled the inspection plate off today and everything seemed fine. Checked wires, and the cooler lines and they checked out.
One thing thar I did notice is this god awful noise coming from the orher side of the pan. Would have pulled it but I've only got a quart of tranny fluid.
Anybody got any suggestions as to what I need to check next?
When I was in my glove box, I noticed this white plug that didn't seem to go to anything. Any thoughts?

There's also a great trick here:

https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f2/free-quick-fix-41821/
have seen this in many cars. generally a light tan burnt fluid isn't bad bad news, it's just a sign of neglect. once you clean and replace the fluid they often come back to life

black is bad, shavings are bad

amazes me how many people never change the fluid. the XJ i now have was picked up with 114k miles. bought from a family who had no idea you were suppose to change the trans fluid and they didn't know why it was shifting rough. long story short after a clean and flush it shifts like new

Thanks for the input. When I went out to mine today you couldn't even hear it going into reverse or drive. It used to slam into gear sometimes and every now and then it would take a minute to change gear. Usually going into third.
I've had her for going on two years now. Without any major issues till around two months ago. I changed the fluid before all this but it was a little dark before. I did notice however that my tv cable was pretty frayed and getting caught in the conduit.
You folks think that was what potentially fried my transmission? I ordered it and it finally came in. A little late.
