Default AW-4 Transmission Swap

I have a 96 SE, 4.0, aw-4, np231 w/sye. What kind of problems will i run into swapping an aw-4 from a 2001 cherokee, if any? Different wire harness? Should I use the TCM from the old tranny or new one? I know the output shaft spline changed in 91 or so, can i pretty much use an AW-4 from 91-whenever?

Default Never mind, I found my answer - NO!

FInally found some info after searching the net for awhile, it looks like they integrated the TCU into the main engine computer after 96, and added some other mods in 99.

not quite

in 98 an input speed sensor was added.

it runs a totally different computer system.

the tcu and location was changed, not integrated. its a possible swap if you follow some wiring diagrams. you will likely set off a cel though.

91- mid 96 aw4's are the same

mid 96 to 98 are compatible with 91-96 but you will need a new wiring harness.

99-01 got all crazy. not only did they add the input speed sensor, but the output speed sensor was changed, not sure what else happened though

the speed sensor is on the TC and I think you can still install the old speedometer unit into the new TC to keep it compatible

thats the vehicle speed sensor

the transmission uses and output speed sensor to tell the computer when to make the tranny shift.

You mention new wiring harness. Want to pull the AW4 from my 94 and put into my 98 (lost reverse in 98 AW4). So all I need to do is ask the dealer for a new trans wiring harness? Thanks in advance.
