There is also the exaust pipe crossing under the pan, so removing the pan completely is almost impossible. The dipstick tube is a 2 piece unit that is susposed to come apart, but after 70,000 or more miles the tube seems to weld itself together. I tried applying heat to the joint and it still did not come apart. You can not remove the pan with the tube attached, so this leaves only @4 inches of drop to get your hands in with a 1/4 drive ratchet to remove the filter. What a pain in the #$$#. I opted to go with the exchange method thru the dipstick. So far with 150,000 and pulling a 3000lb camper twice a year, I have not experienced any slipping or shifting problems. Sometime after the 96 model year Chrysler changed the pan design and it's easier to drop the pan and change the filter.
I had the same problem with the two piece tube. I unbolted the upper section (13mm i think) which is bolted to the bellhousing. Removed the whole unit as one, and wouldn't you know it, the ******* stupid thing fell apart once I unbolted it.

Thumbs up Thanks

Thanks to all. I just got a 1999 Cherokee Sport with 143 k. I changed all the fluids I could. However after reading a lot on here I do agree it makes sence only to change the Trans oil. I do think as well cleaning out lines could be a problem. Let it get use to it for 1 or 2 thousand miles before you change the filter.I also did the Transfer Case as well. It was Black. I will also do that again cause it was so dirty. So far so good with our new jeep. To be honest I enjoy working on it. However I need to change timing chain and with no lift and winter knocking I may wait. It is knocking so a jeep guy told me to put Lucas in the oil to make sure it was not a lifter. Coming From the front he said it sounds like a chain to him. To be honest I hope that's all it is. Thanks Again to all .....BTW its 13 M as you said )
