Default Auto tranny problems

Hi everyone, just wondering if anyone has experienced my problem. I have a 97 cherokee 4.0 with the auto and my jeep didnt come with the towing package. I put a hitch on (and i know i should have put a tranny cooler in there and i will be doing so soon) I was towing my utility trailer through a quite hilly area and the transmission was shifting alot as expected but when i arrived at my destination about an hour later the transmission had leaked out most of its fluid (out of where i have no idea) and had shifting problems. I toped it up at home and ran it for a while shifting through the gears with no leaking. is it possible the tranny got so hot it boiled over? anyone have this problem?

Did you see any leaks? The fluid had to go somewhere.

I could not see where the leak was coming from. when i stoped the underside of the whole jeep from bell bell housing all the way back to the front of my trailer was covered with tranny fluid. by the time i noticed the tranny had stoped leaking. is it possible it overheated and boiled out of the filler tube?

Your transmission overheated. When fluid gets hot it expands. It probably came out the fill tube. How heavy is that trailer you're towing? You definately need a good sized tranny cooler for that trailer and the hilly terran you need to navigate. Here's hoping you didn't damage your tranny. At the very least you should service the fluid and filter in that tranny now.
