Hey Bro!
Seriously, look into the Throttle Position Sensor. My 91 XJ Laredo has 143xxx on it and it was shifting just like yours and trying to die, and even starting to backfire. I was scared something was seriously wrong with it but i went to shucks and ordered a Throttle Position Sensor for 50something dollars and the thing runs like a top now.
Hope I could help!-

Hi, i've had this before, it is probably the tps. The tps is a double tps that gives signal to both ecu and tcu but on different circuits. Be sure to check the right wire (blue and black if i remember correctly) with the voltmeter. Values should vary between 0-5 volts. Check for volt holes in the variation (positions of tps where u have a blank reading on the voltmeter, that means that the brush does not make contact with the variable resistor). It's easier if u take the tps off and rotate the lever on the back with ignition on. Change the tps if the values are not correct. Try also to loosen the kick down cable, it must engage almost at WOT.

Well everyone... it's fixed!!
*sigh*
After everyone saying TPS, TPS, TPS, I replaced the TPS... AGAIN... and it worked.
So, after three TPSes; she's back to shifting. I'm kinda pissed that the brand new TPS I picked up from the dealership was crap, and the AutoZone one did the trick. The junkyard one was crap too, but I figured that one was bad with just a multimeter.
I hope this helps someone else too. Don't think that just because you got a *new* TPS, that it's a good one. I know what you're thinking at this point, "Well, how many do I buy before I say that it's not the TPS?" That is up to you to decide, young Jedi.
Thanks again, everyone!
