Ran one for years and it was invisable in 2wd although it will still ratchet (click) when you turn but only noticable in parking lots and such.

Sounds good. I've heard that they tend to reduce your ability to steer while offroad? Any truth to this?

yeah, a little bit. most noticeably when you're on the skinny going up hill while trying to turn around rocks or trees.
when on the gas and the wheels are turned, the locker tends to lock up and just wants to push straight ahead. turning is diminished slightly.

with that said, you wouldn't want to run it on the road in winter, especially locked front and rear.

I never had a problem steering when going up hill because the weight is shifted back and so you can steer even locked up. My problem with steering while locked up was always when going down really steep water falls with sharp turns at the bottom with drop offs.

I've never had a problem driving in snow with a locked rear axle. Just got to learn how to drive with them.
