Seeing as how you stated that the originals didn't work, I am inclined to say WIRES.
Check them visually and with a multi-meter.
Check them to ground and to each other.
Somewhere the signal for the speakers is getting re-routed.
Also: I have CDX's in BOTH my XJ's.
Wiring harness adapter saves a TON of work and headaches.
BTW: I didn't need an installation kit.
The CDX chassis works great with the OEM radio mounting bracket.
Some minor slotting of holes MAY be needed depending on what model CDX you have.
In our 91 (SHE) has a 320 (IIRC), fit perfect first time.
Mine is a 700 series with the drop down face. Had to redrill the front mounting holes of the oem bracket. Faceplate was contacting the dash bezel.

Gotta be a wire problem. Check wires with a mulit meter as previously stated. Kinda weird that both front don't work.. maybe they were disconnected and just need to be re connected? Also how did you wire the new stereo? Did you use an adapter or cut your stock harness?

i ordered everything from crutch field so i got everything i need to install, the stock plug for the ground of the stock stereo did not fit the ground adapter for the new stereo so i had to cut them both and crimp them. when i took the doors off to replace the speakers i found that the passenger side door was completely unplugged and the foam base that covers the inside of the door when u take the door panel off was torn all around the speaker hole. the driver side speaker used to work if i shook the mass of wires in the rubber tube located in between the door and the car, the speaker would work. now neither of them work so i decided im going to just re wire everything.

Its not that hard but use a decent gauge or cat5. I used cat5 and it sounds ok but I didnt really do all that great of a job so it will sound better if you do it right.
