Does it change with throttle? Are you sure it is coming from the engine, sounded maybe like it was from the flex plate area, but doesn't sound exactly like my flexplate when it was loose. Is the exhaust hitting anything or maybe the fan got a little close to the shroud?

It changes with throttle and I don't think that it's exhaust. I'm wondering if it could be the timing chain.

You defiantly want to check those flex plate bolts. A five minute job and not a bad idea at any time.

Also if someone put the wrong bolt for the top starter bolt it can do that. (to long will hit the flex plate) There's a start, good luck!

OK I'll be checking the flex plate just as soon as I figure out how. Any pointers on that?

There is an inspection plate on the front of the bell housing facing the pan, has a few small hex screws. The torque plate bolts go through the torque plate, (with the teeth for the starter), into the torque converter. There may be 5-17mm. bolts. You need to rotate the engine to get to them all. I've pried at the gear teeth to turn it. You can also tap the starter, but you don't get much control that way. Good
luck! Hope that's it.

Or sometimes it will turn via the bolt it's-self.

I just crawled under there and the noise is coming more from the front. I didn't see anything that indicates the flex plate is loose. When I listen with a screwdriver to the front of the pan it sounds internal. So now I'm wondering if it could be a bearing.

Another fairly easy check, once on a Nissan V-6 the damper pulley bolt "harmonic balancer", was loose causing a bad knock. Now that you are certain the torque converter bolts are tight, if you rule that balancer out, guess you would need to think it's something inside.

(the big pulley on the front end of the crank, 13/16 ths. (or 7/8?).

One thing you can try to help you find what is making that noise.

Take a hose (about the size of the heater core hoses) a couple of feet long and put one end to your ear and the other pointing to the engine. It will help you isolate the sound. Just move it around the engine and follow the loudest area. It should give you a ball park figure, if not the exact things that is making the noise.

Hope that helps.

One of the best tool I have ever bought was a Mechanics Stethoscope http://www.autozone.com/autozone/acc...ier=70131_0_0_

They don't cost much, like $15, and mine really helped me track down a noise that was driving me insane.
