I feel if its going to be on the road, dont weld it. It changes the whole driving aspects of the vehicle (rear axle permanently locked by any means)....and a weld at that. If it let loose at a decent speed (like welds can do in there), especially on the road, i wouldnt wanna be anywhere near it.
speak from experience guys
i have had a welded rear on a daily driver since 2007
never broke anything due to it
never spontaneously lost control in puddles
i put about 15k miles on my rig per year as well.
tires wear out quicker
tires chirp on corners
turning radius isnt what it used to be, but its not terrible
it's cheap
it's strong (as long as you do it right)
it's effective traction.

ok losing control on a puddle on the road is gonna happen when im runnin 33x12.50 not locked in right now and i hydro plane like He** almost losing control so the puddle issue not a big deal. i drive to and from work not like i go on road trips or live in the city so sharp turns only exist in the woods for me and that is where i wanna be locked up anyways.

ive got a welded rear 8.25 in my 89, i drive it everyday around 25 miles a day, no big problem, you get used to how it handles rain/snow, tire wear isnt too much different then before, though i run swmaper tsl radials so who knows if that matters, the squeeling/hopping on corners gets some weird looks though! especially considering its orange with an 01 on the side of it...
