Any body AMC 20?
Hi, I'm not real serouis (at all) but was wondering if an amc 20 swap is a good choice. I have a amc 20 with a tru trac locker sittin' in my dad's garage doing nothing. If I could find wheel spacers to make it wider ( and use my wheels) would this be a good choice. It is the 2 piece axle which is weeker, but how does it compare to a d35 or d44? What about the 1 peice axle kit?

You didn't say which amc20 - there are 3, early or "narrow track", late "wide track", both 5 on 5.5 and a waggy, stronger and 6 lug. Stock they are better than a D35 and not as quite as good as a D44. With a upgrades they pretty good.
I have been running AMC20's in my last 2 CJ's - as long as you aren't running big HP and/or going any bigger that 33" tires they will do just fine but I highly recommend one piece axles. It won't be a bolt-in either, spring purches will have to delt with as well as the driveshaft yoke and you may run into brake balance issues. All items are fixable, just takes time and money.
Hope this helps

there are 4 of them, actually.
mj's came with an mj/xj width 5x4.5 single-piece shaft amc20, only in 86, and only with the "bit ton" package.
and no, it's not a good swap unless you find an mj 44. the housing is stronger than a 35, comparable to a 44, but the shafts are no good...weaker than a d35.

I pretty sure it's a narrow track. I'm on the fence about this idea. I like that fact I already have a tru trac locker. There is a chance it has 4.10's in it. How would they do with the 1 peice axle?
My dad use to wheel the hell out of his amc 20 ( on 35's, 425 horse's) and broke a locker, never a rear end lol
Is there any other info/sites on these?

one must look at what one is doing...is this a daily driver weekend warrior or second vehicle that gets its *** handed to it? there are many good choices out there i would not waste my time making the 20 go, you have to hope that your gears match, the 2pc axle are junk and your wheels won't work and like others said brakes driveshaft all come into play by the time your done you could buy any locker you want for the stock rear for less money and less work.. i got a 9in ford out of a old little bronco 4.56 locker and its sitting right where it is for all those reasons
