Default Anti-Lock Problem

Hey all!

My '91 Cherokee has anti-lock brakes and they're acting up.
Usually the 1st stop does not act right, and it feels like they'res no power boost. The pedal is really stiff, it will stop, but you really have to stand on the pedal, to get it to stop.
Then it works fine, until you shut the car off, and it does it all again.
The odd thing is that it starts out with the anti-lock brake warning light off, and when the brakes seem to work normal, the light comes on.

Has anyone run into this problem, or have any suggestions?

If I accelerate quickly from a stand still, there is a noticible noise from the left front wheel, like a metal vibration.

Take it to the local dealer, your ABS pump may be out. They must replace it for free it has a lifetime warrenty on it. It took them 4 weeks to get the pump and I had to buy the "gernade" so it cost me about $200.00 but its better than the buying the pump at $1200.00 Be careful though you stopping power is gone !!!!!!!

Check the individual ABS sensors on each front wheel, clean them off if dirty. Same with the exciter rings. If not any of that, probably the ABS modulator could be going or have something blocking the hyd. lines to/from it? Was the M/C changed recently? I just ran across this problem on a Caravan with a new M/C. Pressure built up enuff to blow the lines on it (they were corroded a bit). Could also be a Booster going south...

Thanks xj4life2!

I'll stop by the dealer tomorrow.

I think the vibration noise is from the driver's excitor ring.
