Default Another Clunk Thread

Sorry if this has been covered elsewhere, but I haven't found any posts with my particular "clunk". When I come to a stop, all's fine. When I let the brakes off to start out, I get a clunk from the rear. Now, if I stop on a slight incline, it does not clunk. If I stop, and put it in neutral, it doesn't clunk. Only when sitting in drive with the brakes applied,on level ground, or on a decline.. then letting off the brakes.
One other thing rear related. When cruising 40mph and above, there is a humming/whirring noise (not loud) coming from the rear. It stops immediately if I let up on the gas a little, but as soon as the gas is re-applied to maintain speed, the sound comes back.
Thoughts?

I had it at my mechanic's for state inspection. He pulled the drive shaft and said the Universals seemed ok, maybe the front it a little worn, but not much.. couldn't find/feel anything loose- put it back and it is/was nearly gone.. it's only slight now, sometimes. Any more ideas?

Leaf spring bushing or shock bushing are poss. for the clunk. The whirring sound you are hearing is most likely wear pattern noise from your ring and pinion, not a huge concern as long as you do standard maintenance--Rear diffs can and do shoot craps without much if any warning. If you are not abusing it ,you can expect a long and healthy life from it.
