Default alternator question

so my friend was telling me that i could go to a junkyard and pull an alternator out of a 98 grand cherokee and run it in my xj, and that then i would have an upgraded alternator. anyone know anything about this? is that the only year? will it actually work? and how much better of an alternator would it be?

Yes but only if it is the 136 amp alternator...Otherwise it's not an upgrade..

oh really? do you know how many amps are in the alternator from a 95, because i believe they beefed them up in 97. But thanks, and my friend said i have to pull it out of the housing from the gc and put it in the xj housing, know anything about this?

The housing will have to be altered slightly to fit your XJ but that can easily be done. Just a little grinding.
Not sure about the 95s output but it is less than the 136 that the recommended altenator has going for it. Might be 80-90.

Pose your question in the Grand Cherokee section and ask which year 4.0L GC had the 136amp altenator.

Checked this out before.... Go to Autozone and ask for the 120A alternator for a 97 grand cherokee. 120A was an upgrade option the standard alternator was 90A and is the exact same part number of the one that I put in my 92 XJ. Oh and its $200 for the 120A with a lifetime warranty. I don't know the prices for the other chains, but Autozone was the cheapest around here.

Was it a direct bolt on or did you have to modify it in any way?

I haven't done it yet, I read that it was a pretty much a bolt on with the XJ alternator being 6 groove pully and the ZJ 120A being a 7 groove pully. I was just doing a verification of the information by comparing part numbers, and the 90 amp on the 97 ZJ was the same on my 92 XJ.

I just looked on Advanced Auto and napa and you can get the 120amp with the 6 groove pulley..Also I was googling and it should bolt right up. The 120 just has a larger casing so it will be a tight fit. Might be worth checking into for those wanting to upgrade..You can often get them cheap at the JY and spend about $50 or so to have em rebuilt.
