has anyone ever had an alternator go out so slowly that the accessories go out but the batt still gets a charge?

 

Uncommon, but possible. It would be cause either by brush wear (losing contact with sliprings = losing current transfer area) or by everything getting really crudded up in there.

I'd probably pull the alternator, clean it out (use electric motor cleaner,) and replace the brush pack - but that's just me.

Chances are good that the coils are still fine, it's just the brushes and such that are causing trouble for you.
