Alternator issue

Alternator issue
I think my alternator is squeeking. It sounds like my belt but my belt is fairly new and I can point in the direction of the squeek if needed. It is low on the passenger side. If I find a used alternator say from a junk yard or here on cf.com, what is too old? How would I know it is usable?
