I have a 91 that the previous owner had done some parts swapping on, because it has a left door and dash VIN plate from a 90. The build sheet under the passenger door trim panel is missing the last half of the VIN. It's not real important but wondering if anyone had found any other locations for the VIN number. Russ

I attached a link: http://www.automotivetouchup.com/paint-codes/jeep.htm
This is for the color codes but it usually contains the same place the VIN# is attached (two for one for you)!
Regarding your VIN number peculiarities:
Typically if your VIN on the registration in your hand doesn't match the vehicle you may have an issue. What raises an immediate concern to me is that you're missing the last four on your VIN, this doesn't happen unless someone does this on purpose.
...bad bad bad, yes very bad.
In either case, depending upon local laws, messing with a VIN is usually bare minimum a misdemeanor. If a cop sees this he/she will automatically charge you for that. If he/she continues and finds your information doesn't match in several places to your reg AND if ANY associated VIN#s are found to be stolen........You will be charged probably with a felony and taken to jail- Possession of stolen vehicle or charged with stealing a vehicle.
So take that off the roadway and don't drive it until you can figure out what the heck is going on with it.
This is ASSUMING YOU DIDN'T STEAL IT and are trying to figure out how to cover it up!
tbDK - local jurisdiction, Felony status usually but you have to check local laws.
Good luck, hope the link helps.

The firewall/hood hinge area location was the trick - thanks!
I agree on the "legality" worries - I do have a clear title on the dash / drivers door VIN - and unless someone has a reason to double check the firewall plate (?! what - only rivets holding that on?), I don't see any reason to worry - at least in this part of Utah!

Just to clarify, the VIN on the dash and the drivers door do match my registration and title. The only reason I started wondering was the HO engine didn't match the 90 title.
The last of the VIN was only missing on the paper build sheet found under the right door trim panel. I found out the donor 90 vehicle was stripped and the shell was so damaged that it was crushed. Russ

Hi. I bought a Jeep Cherokee in 2002. There is a change of right side in a service shop in Italy. But here in Bulgaria I cannot register it. They cannot find the vine frame number. It is only on the driver's license plate.Where can this passenger compartment be located?
Should be a label on the driver side door, a tag riveted to the dash that is visible thru the windshield, and a stamped metal plate riveted to the firewall next to the hood hinge. Check the inner fenders also. the VIN should be physically stamped into the sheetmetal next to the battery ground cable, and another on the driver side near the PCM. the main body panels of a vehicle are often stamped somewhere, or have a white label with the VIN. Those labels can fade over time and sometimes are no longer readable.

It's supposedly stamped into the bumper horn part of the frame on the driver's side. Supposedly.
