Are all fan clutches created equal?

I'm replacing the fan clutch in my 1990 cherokee... one more idea to try to troubleshoot my overheating problems.

Are there any considerations I need to make when getting one? Are they all basically the same?

I found one for $50 here:
http://www-b.autopartswarehouse.com/...01/HY2625.html

Is that good enough? If not, could someone recommend something else (or another site to buy from) please?

Thanks guys :)

no they are not
the one you link to is a spring clutch
the better ones are gel

ether way you need to be sure its the right size and heat rang for your Cherokee

Is this the sort of part, then, like a thermostat, that it's better just to get from a jeep dealer directly?

no you can get a good one from a parts house

and the spring clutch work fine the just are not as smooth kicking in

any car you drove in as a kid probably had a spring clutch

Your local parts house should sell the gel filled type. As for the t-stat a nice HD style is the best way. On the t-stat do not cheap out and do not get a spring loaded fan clutch they will wear out way to fast.

On the t-stat get a nice Stant superstat..can't beat em and they last a long time from my experience.

Great, thanks for the advice guys :)

there was a thread going around with a part # for a TJ? that is supose to cool better? its like 40$

Metmknice 06-03-2009 06:49 PM

Best bet for a fan clutch is a ZJ HD fan clutch (W/out Max cooling) only 30-60$ depending on parts store.

for 64 bucks at kragen auto you can get a good electric fan to replace the mechanical
69 bucks at summit

interesting, it's an exact-fit bolt on part? Or do I need to replace the fan itself too? Does it matter what year that you get?

dont forget the cost of a relay and a thermal swith to turn it on......

I cant say for sure but if I cant find the neon fan at a junk yard for cheep
I will be buying one and my old gel fan clutch will be up for grabs

kidkodiak 06-03-2009 07:29 PM

Yeah, I wanted to try the Neon Fan idea too, but JY's are limited out here and the only one I know of... yeah, $125 for it :(

That's why I'm back to a fan clutch =\

if I were you I would not spend the money on a new clutch

I am running with no mechanical fan right now with no over heating problems

you need
thermostat
water pump
or new radiator

and check the bottom house to be sure its not collapsing
it should have a metal spring inside it to keep it from collapsing if its rusted out that may be it
