Default Airbag light

Hey all,

I found the culprit for an airbag light that's been on since I picked up the jeep, thought I'd post the solution after lots of forum searching and not finding a similar condition.

99 Cherokee Classic, 4.0, 4x4, Aw4.

Symptoms: With key on/start, airbag light comes on while performing self test, goes out after test (maybe 30 seconds). Comes back on within 5-10 seconds. I suspected a bad connection. Checked/cleaned all connectors (after disconnecting battery for at least 10 mins), no real change. Sometimes would take longer for the light to come back on, really seemed like connection issue.

Fix: when installing new carpet, ground from ACM to body (black w pink tracer) seemed a bit corroded, so I cut the wire, new connector on the end, installed in a new hole in the sheetmetal. Airbag light now stays off.

Hope that saves someone some grief sometime... Happy trails!

Thanks for sharing. When I took the carpet and interior out my H3 hummer due to a a completely soaked carpet (leaking sunroof), I noticed a couple things: 1) There are many grounds around the floor in various areas. Not just one or two, they are peppered in the front, in the center (on the floor) and some at the rear of the interior floor area. So, it's clear Gounds are real important. 2) A couple of these grounds were badly corroded, just like you found on your Jeep ...from past leaks and carpeting remaining soaked for long periods before I bought the vehicle. Electrons from from negative to positive, so you can't overlook the importance of grounds weather it's in the interior, firewall, engine or where ever.

Anyway, great job, glad you found it. Thanks for sharing and reminding people.

Also worth noting: I've seen it first hand where connectors for airbags DO slip off, or won't completely stay on. So like you did, check them out too.
