Default Air intake hose --- My first modification?

My '89 4L six has been a workhorse since it was new. But I must replace the air intake hose ASAP, because the electric fan came loose and tore it up. Could go to a wrecking yard for an old replacement ... but I'm thinking now might be a good time to start learning about aftermarket improvements.

I'm not ready to spend a lot of money and don't want to spend hours reading advertisements, so what would YOU do? I mean wrt air cleaner and intake.

The usage of this vehicle is around-town commuting and hauling stuff. It gets out of town very rarely, but for the desert this summer I want the cooling system in top shape. (I just replaced the overflow reservoir for the 2nd time.) Pointers to the more popular customizations / tricks / aftermarket stuff are appreciated, thanks.

Cheap eh? Well first things first, pick up a new hose from the junkyard. If it has the silly intake retrictor ditch it. Then look at a cowl intake mod: https://www.cherokeeforum.com/f67/my-version-cowl-snorkle-67919/ Definitely help In the desert.

By the way this is not an OEM Tech question, in the future try the Modified Tech forum.

Welcome to the site, you'll love working on your Jeep!

Stock is not a bad setup. Like salad says you can rip out that restriction, I used vice grips.

Be sure to leave the bottle about 1/2 empty so air in it can compress.

Here you go Pete. This is what the deal looks like after you rip it out of the tube between the air-box and the TB.

Yea, I did install the low profile green cap, don't have the Napa# handy. I think the only time I had a problem with stock is when I installed a bottle from a Waggy or something that came with a taller cap that hit the hood.
