The two most important wires to make sure that are connected when installing any cd player, would be your ground, (black wire), and your power wire (red wire). All of the other wires such as green, purple, and orange, (and sometimes gray) will be for your speakers, and fade. The yellow wire is your illumination/memory. Is it not lighting up...does it evn powerup...or what is it doing. I can walk you thru a trouble-shoot if ud like...

yeah im aware of what differnet color wires need to go where ive installed a few of these in my day. but on the ground cause i think this is my problem on tester i get a light on but not when using the factory ground. i pulled the dash and attached a new ground to some metal going to the firewall. still no go. tester light wont come on when using this ground either. clamp a wire onto the t-case shifter and i get tester lights but if i try to get the cd player to work of a ground wire going to the t-case lever still no go. but im getting power to the stereo when its plug in verifed with tester light. on the two grounds i made i used a spade type conntered drilled to the bottom of the dash and behind the dash. .,.
so how can i get a better ground? location i have heavy gauge wire left from PO who had a system installed in this jeep. all factory harrness are still there
thanks for the help so far

First thing's first. Even if you've installed many headunits in the past... you can still make simple mistakes. Check your wiring.
Black - Ground
Red - Hot +12VDC
Yellow - Ignition Power +12VDC when key is on
Blue - Remote (Hook to power antenna or amp. If not leave empty)
All other colors - Speakers (Make sure none are shorted out, some headunits have a safety that won't allow them to turn on if they detect a short.)
Have you checked the wiring harness on the headunit? I've had a few with loose connections.
If you think your ground is the problem, take the ground wire from the back of the headunit and ground it out at a known good ground. (Add a length of wire if needed)
To test the headunit, twist the red and yellow wires together and touch them to the positive side of your battery. Touch the black wire to the negative side of the battery. The headunit should then come on. If not, the headunit or wiring harness is faulty. Be careful not to touch wires in the wrong places, and remember, the headunit has a metal case... don't let it touch the battery terminals.

Any unpainted metal surface that's rust and corrosion free should make a good ground. Seat bracket bolts, door catch, any part of the body/ chassis that is unpainted. Fail proof ground.... Negative terminal on the battery. Take a scrap piece of wire and use it as a jumper to reach the negative terminal on the battery. (This wire won't be used for the install... only for testing, so it doesn't have to be pretty. Just run it through the door/window and under the hood.)
I wouldn't use the ground from the factory stereo wiring harness, only because it's under question right now. You're just trying to figure out if a bad ground is infact the reason why the headunit isn't working.

That's good. Hook the red and yellow wired up properly under the dash and hook the black wire up to a good ground (Not the one in the dash) and see if it works. Turn the key to the on or accessories position and see if the headunit turns on. If it turns on, then the ground wire under the dash is faulty. If it doesn't turn on, check to make sure the radio fuse is good, and make sure you didn't forget to hook the battery back up. (We all make stupid mistakes) Post back when you've done this.
