Default Aftermarket alarm causing power issues? Or something else?

Hey all,

New to the forum but have a question. I was given about 7 months ago a 97 Jeep Cherokee country that was previously my little sisters. always maintained well. has close to 200,000 miles on it.

Have had numerous issues due to its age obviously but past couple weeks is an odd issue. Twice last week when i would disarm the alarm it would start but imediately die. I re armed the alarm and disarmed it and then it started fine. Second time it didnt it next day and tried the alarm again but didnt work so by reving up the gas for 10 seconds it finally stayed running. On the road it runs fine. Put full tank of gas next day and fuel cleaner and since then hasnt died.

yesterday i was leaving the bar, disarmed the alarm, put the key in the ignition and boom, everything just went dead. The battery is fairly new. rearmed and disarmed the alarm and tried again and same thing no power. I popped the hood and noticed the hood light came on so it had power. I tried starting again and started just fine. A guy i know parked next to me checked with the voltmeter and power was fine. What the hell is this??? doesnt make sense and i do know my mechanic stuff fairly decent but more sports cars than jeeps. Thanks for reading!

Depending on the alarm, if it is violated it may only do an ignition/starter disconnect for anti-theft.

It will not go "boom" and kill the whole Jeep electrical system.

Might be a faulty/worn ignition switch. Bad ground(s). Loose or corroded connection(s) somewhere. Internally corroded battery cable(s). Etc.

Yeah, you may be right. Gasoline inside + electrical problems could lead to BOOM!
