advice needed for changing oil filter adapter o rings

1999 jeep xj 4.0 auto 4wd

So I tried to change my oil filter adapter o rings today and couldn't get the adapter off, I bought the t60 socket and beat the t60 part out and used a 12mm wrench to try and turn bolt but it won't budge, any tips on how I can get this off?

A friggin' long breaker bar. I had a 5 foot long piece of pipe on mine to break it free. Also, they say having a warm motor will help.

Once you get it off the repair is super easy :)

^ +1. I just did mine last week. Fortunately I have access to a lift so I was able to use a long piece of pipe over the breaker bar for leverage.

I was able to find a pipe that fit over the wrench itself, and use the extra leverage to break mine loose. I had to do it from below.

I did mine with a buddy who has A 94, we put the 12mm box end on the t60 using some rtv and then used a half of a floor Jack handle on the open end from up top. If you have another set of hands skip the rtv and just hold it.

Yeah I tried warming up the motor also, I'll have to go get a price of pipe some where and try again, is it easier to come from the top or underneath with the pipe?

Do you have a hi-lift? The handle is a piece of pipe and can be used as a breaker bar.

I came from the top. It's a huge PITA to get off, but trust me it will eventually break loose. I think I had to put a bend in my pipe to keep it from hitting the hood too... Good luck!

you can add a wrench to the end of the 12mm wrench, that's what I did.

That is an excellent trick that I have used many times, especially on the smaller wrenches like 12mm.
Never have broken a wrench in doing it, but still wear eye protection.

This with a pipe over it. Advance sell a set for like $10 ,and you'll need them cause jeep used a lot of torx bolts.

Waynerd Sep 29, 2015 06:37 PM

I left the torx bit in the socket and used big pipe wrench on the socket.
