I have a 1999 AX15 manual and a 1999 auto. In the process of swapping the OEM cruise control to the AX15 equipped jeep. I swapped everything over but couldn't get the cruise control light to turn on. I swapped the PCM from the auto jeep and the cruise control now lights up but does not function.

I get an error code P1698.

The shift light does not work with the swapped PCM, but it won't start without engaging the clutch just like the original PCM. I have been trying to find someone to program the original PCM to enable the cruise control option but no luck thus far. I spoke with a dealership who seemed to indicate they no longer have the tools to work with me on this. And calling one of the places that offer replacement PCMs said the replacement will be programmed however the original one came from the factory.

I'm pretty sure that cruise control was offered as an option on the 1999 AX15 jeeps. And I was hoping that this was a plug and play solution.

Does anybody have experience with adding cruise control to a manual XJ?

 

Seems like I have solved the issue. After driving around with the donor PCM for a day I reinstalled the original PCM. The cruise control now functions normally.

I had the battery disconnected while pulling the steering wheel, but I guess the PCM needed to powered off for much longer.

Hope this helps anybody with the same issue in the future.
