Question adding a factory 3rd brake light to a 90 xj

I was thinking Of adding a Factory 3rd brake light to my 1990 xj,,,, What do I need exactly to do this I What year did they start to offer a 3rd brake light? I want to use all factory oem parts... pictures would be great to see ... I figured another brake light would not hurt... I do not want to get rear ended... the more brake lights the better i think... let me know what you think... thank you

You want to add a third brake lite when you don't need one. You want to know where to get parts and what we think?

Do you live in the city?

Get a trailer hitch. One of them that fits in a big square reciever. U haul has them and will install. You want one not to high and not to low. Like as high as a taxi bumper but not lower. The idea is to stop the taxi before it hits you.

You can run a wire for a third break light from the rear light or the trailer wireing. Any junk yard should have a light.

Don't tell anyone what the trailer hitch is for. Just say you had to pull a trailer. The taxi's will respect you and keep their distance.

a third brake light from any 91?-96 XJ will fit no problem, and you can splice into your brake lights for power.

Agreed on the trailer hitch idea, get a stout one (class III) and add a "step" receiver to the back so they hit that instead of your bumper.
like this:
Amazon.com: Go Rhino! D360B Dominator Black Hitch Step: Automotive Amazon.com: Go Rhino! D360B Dominator Black Hitch Step: Automotive
There is a problem with this idea though...if you are hit hard enough, the force will not be absorbed by the bumper, but instead be transferred into the frame and well...you. Under a moderate speed rear impact you're going to be looking at possible "frame" damage and personal injury.

Personally, i'd still do it if i was in your situation, but take it out and throw it in the back if i was going to be driving on highways.

no you misunderstood, the light and bracket are one piece, you just screw it into the tailgate framing.

no, if the holes aren't already there, make them be there with self tapping screws. The gates are the same on pre-97 XJs so you should be fine

Get ya the the drop hitch type extension for the trailer hitch. Put a 2 inch ball on it . If you get that foot step thing you will be saying to the taxi drivers. Please bump me !!! Plus you are spending 95 dollars extra to be nice to the taxi drivers who are running into you then driving off. This is all you need. When a taxi hits it it will go through his bumper, through his radiator, or anything it hits. That is the idea. tear up the taxi. The taxi drivers know this and will not hit you in the rear.
