Default Accelerator problems?

I am having two seperate, but occasional problems with my 1987 Jeep Cherokee XJ, 4.0, auto. Occasionally when I start it, the throttle sticks wide open. I can't get it to drop down into a lower or idle rpm no matter how much I kick down on the accelerator or play with accelerator lever under the hood. The cables do not seem to be sticking. The other problem I am having ocassionally, is when I stop for a light or traffic, instead of the engine idling down, it stops running. So far I have not had any problem getting it to restart. When it does act up, it will do so several times during that trip. sometimes it will cut out and stop while running at low speed, say 20 mph or less. I can keep it from stalling out if I keep pressure on the accelerator while using the brake to keep me stopped for traffic or a light. Any Ideas?
