OK, whomever put the two E12 bolts in the top of the tranny should be imprisoned. I live in a small town in Idaho and had to order the sockets (couldn't find a wrench). Luckly set came with E14 because of gunk I couldn't get E12 on. Was able to break the drivers side by lowering engine/tranny and using to 24 inch extensions to get on it. Moved over to passenger side (tried E12 first) and ended up rounding out the bolt a bit. Gonna try a craftsman grab it all 10mm this evening. If that doesn't work has anyone tried anything else? I don't have a turbo socket in 10mm or I would probably just use that. Thoughts????????????????

The external torx head tapers down.. get on it straight as you break it loose..

Tapping it on should help with the crud on it.. anything other than an E-12 runs the risk of rounding it off. If you should have done so try a 3/8" 12 point socket.

 

Pull the head. Makes it easier to get at the bolt.

 

Alright, I'll give everyone a rundown of what worked for me so they can add it to their bag of tricks:

I couldn't get a wrench to hold onto the bolts so I dropped the tranny down a few inches and got about 4ft worth of extensions. Couldn't hammer the sockets on becuase there is about 2 inches of space around the bolt and the extensions weren't stiff enough. So, I was able to finally break the passenger side bold with one of those universal 3/8 sockets Sears sells. I grabbed a set of turbo sockets just in case and will keep them for future use. After that things went smooth and I now have a 4.0 with a hole in the block hanging from my cherry picker. Can't wait to get my junkyard block and goodies back from the machine shop so I can start my build.

 

Same thing here lots of pb blaster. Drop your tranny and stick with your e12 the last thing you want to do is round that off. Just make sure you get it on all the way get it started from above and use a bar to snug it on then get to it from the bottom with extensions and just be patient. Harbor freight sells an s shaped e12 wrench. That will fit from above its just a pain in the back side no matter how you look at it.
